imperfectlyperfect: Text: I like being weird. Weird's all I've got, that and my sweet style (Sweet Style)
My mother did teach me the basics of painting my nails, back when I was a little girl with my Tinkerbelle cosmetics, and periodically, I'd try my hand at it again, but I was never great shakes at it (more on that in a minute) and mostly, I stuck to painting my toes, which were more forgiving of fuck-ups and kept the polish for longer. I'd often go through such long periods of not painting them that the polish would separate in the bottle and need to be thrown out and a new bottle acquired.

If that's your situation, btw, look into nail polish minis. Godsend, if you don't use a lot of polish!

Anyway. So when I started doing all this a few months ago, I had to start from scratch, both in acquiring nail polishes and in re-teaching myself how to polish, because, seriously, I'd forgotten everything except "the gloppy end goes on the nail".

The most common sense thing I'm going to say here is: practice makes perfect. The more I polish my nails, the better I get at making them neat and not streaky and not glopped all over the place (though, really, there are always going to be those days where you can't do shit right. That's what nail polish remover is for.

The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now. )

There is a community on DW for talking about nail polish and sharing pix of your manicures, etc.: [community profile] takethistopcoat. I like it because a lot of the people who post there, like me, seem to be a little messy, a little imperfect and just trying out stuff because they like it and it makes them feel good. Traffic volume in the comm is usually pretty light, from what I can see, but I enjoy being part of it.

ETA: I stared a community here on DW called [community profile] nailfiles. It's basically like the "storyfinders" of nail polish; a place to ask questions, get recs, seek advice, etc. /ETA

Yeah, so I think that's the sum total of my nail polish knowledge at the moment. What about you? Any tips, vendors, advice to share with a n00b?
