Having gotten the palate cleanser I wanted with the Lime Crime pastels, I then decided I did want to try and do something warm and autumn/wintery...but without invoking Christmas.

I leave it to you to decide how well I succeeded:

Man, what a mess. So I got all my pictures back pretty painlessly, but the way my back up service saves them, I ended up with doubles of some pictures and I still haven't unraveled everything. But with the help of my posts on Instagram, I think I've figured out where I left off.

These are all colors you've seen before. I think I mentioned it before, but I have an inexplicable abhorrence about wearing anything that's too Christmassy (IDEK), and it's the time of year where almost everything looks holiday-ish, so I decided to go in the opposite direction: summery pastels.

Lime Crime's Les Desserts d'Antoinette collection was perfect for the job.

Time for Dessert! )

So, a heads up: my computer blew up over the weekend and I was able to restore it by rolling it back to factory default, but it means that I have to recover all my pictures. Which I can do, because I have a back up program (Carbonite, if you have things you are terrified of losing on your computer, I HIGHLY recommend it), but it takes time because pictures (and music, the two files I have the most of) are BIG files. So it may take a little while to get organized again. Sorry!

After damning Glitter Gal yesterday for having holographic polishes that aren't really holographic enough, I'm going to talk about how much I love this polish by A England.

I can't get over how much I love Pretty Serious's polishes. I wish it wasn't so pricey, between the Australian dollar rate conversion rate and the shipping, because I would absolutely buy everything the company makes. Of the 6 polishes in the collection I bought, there's not one that's less than AMAZING.

Let's look at Nightmaren... )

Pretty Serious nail polish (and other cosmetics) can be purchased at Pretty Serious Cosmetics

Glitter Gal can be purchased through Llarowe or Harlow & Co or through Glitter Gal directly, though obviously that's a rather more expensive option, as they're also an Australian company.

Now that [livejournal.com profile] mini_wrimo is behind me, I can start using some of those re-allocated spoons to catching up on posts over here.

This is, quite possibly, the most beautiful manicure I have ever done. It's amazing and gorgeous and SO FREAKING EASY I couldn't believe it.

The galaxy manicure.

Apparently, these were a big thing a while ago, and, being the geek that I am, I've been wanting to try them forever. I just thought it would be harder to do, and so I never tried. And then I did!

The amazing, super-easy, five minute galaxy. )

Even The Husband was impressed with this one and how much it really looked like miniature pictures of space. I'm generally pretty happy with most of the manicures I do, but this is one of those few manicures that feels like it really went a step above. I was reading a book I hated at the point in time that I did this manicure, and when the hate got to be too much, I'd stop and stare at my nails and let their awesomeness calm me down.

I can't wait to try this again, with different polishes.

The difference between good customer service and bad customer service, a graphic lesson.

Ninja Polish: FAIL. )

Now. On the other hand, let's look at Butter London. Butter London: YAY! )

Where I want to give Ninja Polish a huge "FU!", I find myself thinking, "Well, $14 isn't SO terrible for good polish" regarding Butter London. And really, that's all it takes. It is only ENLIGHTENED SELF INTEREST for a company to have good customer service. As a result of Butter's good service, I spent quite a bit of money that now goes into their pocket. As a result of Ninja's, not only do I not ever want to shop with them again, I won't recommend them to anyone, I won't send any friend or acquaintance's business in their direction. It doesn't take much to shake or break a customer's faith and in this global, online marketplace, even small companies like Ninja Polish can't afford to lose buyers to their THICK competition.

Grargh.

I have manicures to post up for you...*hangs head*...but in the meantime, Zoya is having a deal on 3 polishes for $20 with free shipping. You can either buy one of their pre-set trios or pick your own three colors. Use the code DREAM at check out.

I wanted to try out Pretty& Polished Rat-a-tat, a glitter polish with very fine turquoise bar glitter, turquoise and black micro-glitter, and turquoise and black hexes in various sizes. I didn't want to put on as much as I'd need to for it to be opaque, that meant I needed undies. I tried out a few different combinations before I settled on Lilacquer Super Green.

So tomorrow from 5 to 7 you're gonna give yourself a hand, green? Super green. )

Cult Nails just came out with a new collection, called Behind Closed Doors. The swatches of the collection looked really gorgeous--and very timely for fall!--and the release (and the early release price!) happened to coincide with that brief period of time every month where I happen to have some disposable cash.

So. You know what happened. Yeah.

Anyway. I didn't photograph the entire collection and I didn't swatch (too impatient) but you can see swatches here, or just google it yourself.

I went straight to the application. I chose Afterglow )

There's a code "DTN13" for a FREE Zoya Nail Polish with any non-spoon purchase at zoya.com through 11/15/2012.

You put the polish in your cart; when you apply the code, it deducts the cost of one polish from your total.

Standard shipping is about $7 and still applies.

Disclaimer: For reasons I don't quite understand, I find myself really opposed to manicures that seem too Christmassy to me. I don't even know what it is. But, though I think this manicure is fairly lovely, it's just too much like a Christmas ornament.

Top Coat Update: I found NYC's Grand Central Station at my most recent visit to Target. It's their quick dry top coat and, at less than $2, definitely worth trying out. It's a little strong smelling, but it does dry and cure VERY quickly and gives reasonable shine with no noticeable shrinkage. The odor is less annoying to me than China Glaze and, for the price, I am VERY impressed with it. If you're looking for a good, cheap, quick dry, this would be my recommendation.

I have to say: I was not super impressed with the one NYC color polish I bought (super sheer, super watery) but I have been VERY pleased with both top coats I've purchased. High quality results for incredibly low price.

I've mentioned Rainbow Honey before. It and Cult Nails were probably the first indie companies I heard of, and I was really enamored with Rainbow Honey's Equestria Collection.

However, after careful consideration--of the polishes and my budgetary consideration--I realized that there were really only two of the Equestria collection that I felt I had to have: The Worst Possible Thing and 20% Cooler.

By the time I was ready to buy those, however, Rainbow Honey had come out with another collection, the Sakura Matsuri collection, and it had another must-have for me, Koi Pond. So I bought all three.

I swatched Koi Poind over Lime Crime's Pastelchio when I bought ti and it looked AMAZING, but I wanted to try it over something else, something that would be maybe reminiscent of, you know, a koi pond.

Ms. Rutter of Arched Eyebrow said plus-size shoppers are conditioned to buy only cheap clothing.

“We don’t have aspirational designer fashion under our noses every time we pick up a magazine,” she said. “There aren’t pages and pages of Miu Miu or Isabel Marant to set the tone for the quality and price of clothes we could wear.”

One problem is that plus-sizes are often considered a transient state, a shameful stop before heading back to smaller sizes.

“When you feel that your current body is temporary, why spend money dressing it well?” said Ragini Nag Rao, 27, who writes for the blog A Curious Fancy from England and India. “Fat women need to realize that their bodies are worth dressing well.”

Pretty Serious is both an indie company and an import; it's a small but burgeoning company in Australia. I first saw their polishes on Scrangie's blog. I rather hilariously didn't realize that the company was Australian--until I was paying for the collection I was buying--but I have to say...it was TOTALLY WORTH the extra dough on the conversion rate (damn you, weak American dollar!). The entire collection I bought (Into the Night) is incredibly lovely.

In the end, the answer was a Stroke of Brilliance. )

'tini Beauty Lounge is a site/company that came to my attention for their lip stain--incidentally, the best lip stain I've ever come across, hands down--and though I kept eyeballing their nail products, I had yet to buy anything from them.

[personal profile] nilchance & [personal profile] beanside gave me a bottle of Bordeaux Bliss a while ago, but it looked so wishy-washy in the bottle, I hadn't been in a hurry to try it.

BIG MISTAKE. )
imperfectlyperfect: Close-up of fingernails painted dark purple with white nail art. (Default)
Glitter Gal is another of those companies that doesn't seem to be an indie in the true sense of the word; that is, they seem to be a fairly sizeable Australian cosmetics company, they talk about having retailers worldwide, but I've only seen their products through smaller online retailers like Llarowe & Ninja Polish. So I don't know.

One mistake that I keep making over and over is forgetting to look at bottle size. I feel like Glitter Gal is rather expensive for the size bottle; below the cut, you'll see their 9ml and their 10ml bottle next to a standard size Essie bottle (13.5ml).

Obviously, a lot of the pleasure of playing with nail polish is visual, so I link hop through a lot of blogs, I have a Facebook filter with a lot of nail polish manufacturers on it and I do a lot of window shopping.

Ludurana is one of those "not really indie" polishes; it's a Brazilian company and seems to be fairly large, though their polishes seem to only be available in the US through more small-scale brokers like Llarowe.

I saw Ludurana Show on Llarowe's site (it was featured on their front page for quite some time) and immediately fell in love. It's a GORGEOUS multichrome polish, like a oil slick rainbow; primarily blue/purple, but with rich flashes of green and red and gold. Seriously, I was OVERCOME with lust.

Sadly, I waited a little too long to take the plunge (I was waiting for Purple Smoke to come into stock, so I could buy them both at the same time) and it was sold out by the time I was ready. Fortunately, after a little bit of searching, I found it on ninjapolish.com, a site similar to Llarowe.

I was so excited!

Well. It turned out to be more of a mixed bag than I thought. )

I was really excited to get Contrary Polish Purple Smoke. It's a polish I'd seen on a number of different blogs, and all the screenshots made it look just gorgeous, a dark, smoky gray with beautiful shimmers of blue and purple.

You can see them here on Manicurator's blog. I've said before: I'm a sucker for a good gray polish.

Unfortunately, Purple Smoke didn't quite live up to the hype.
