so, this particular day was not a good manicure day. All the polishes I tried had big, annoying problems with application. I initially thought it might be chalked up to the amount of humdity in my apartment, as I can't take dryness in winter, but after a little googling, I don't think the problem was me or the apartment, it's the polish.

I started with Piggy Polish Make Waves.

It was the periwinkle blue color that won me over with this polish and it's the only Piggy Polish I own. All things being equal, I'm not looking to buy another one any time soon.

The color IS amazing, but the formula is crap. It's sheer, it's watery and hard to control. It's streaky, it balds, it's brushy, it's slow to dry and it BUBBLES. Which...as I'm looking, doesn't show in either of these pictures. But trust me, it bubbles a LOT.

I took the polish off and tried to reapply, taking more time with it, to see if the bubbling was a problem of impatience, but no, it bubbled up just as bad the second time around. Meh. I took it off and called it a day.

The next polish I tried was Chameleon Nucleus. I'd seen swatches of a few Chameleon polishes and had almost immediately rushed out to see if my local Rite Aid carried them (I believe they're Rite Aid exclusive?). I picked up Nucleus, Fandango and Blue Sky.

Chameleon's claim to fame is that they're all duo/multichrome polishes. Nucleus is a rose/brown/gray/purple polish. I tried to capture as many of the color shifts as I could, but honestly, I don't know if I could capture them all. The formula has problems, but the colors on Chameleon polishes as BREATHTAKING.

Here you can see the rose/purple/blue, and a bit of gold on the thumb. You would barely believe this is the same polish as the first picture, right? But, you can also see some of the bubbling on the nails.

The formula on Nucleus doesn't live up to it's rich color. It's a very sheer polish (this is three coats), it's watery (floods), is slow to dry and, as mentioned (and shown) it bubbles). But, OH, that color...

In the normal run of things, I'd probably just wear a polish like this by itself. But between my annoyance at the bubbling and a sense of adventure, I decided to see how it would look in something more elaborate. I decided to try a cloud manicure.

I used Zoya Purity as my in-between color. I think these are my best clouds yet, even though you can see where I had to go over my thumb a second time to get greater opacity. But I really liked the starkness of the white.

My original plan was to use another Chameleon polish as my third color, but given how sheer and watery the polish is, I decided that probably wouldn't work very well and I should use something both more opaque and more striking. I chose Zoya Aurora, a blingy magenta-purple holo.

Wow, I liked this manicure (other than the bubbling, which drives me nuts)

And, though the purple of Aurora did pick up the purple in Nucleus, Nucleus didn't lose its duochrome properties like so many other duochromes do, giving the look of a really unique and interesting sky above the clouds.

Cloud manicures have a certain amount of visual interest from its own design, but I really liked the little extra attraction from the color shift of Nucleus and the holo of Aurora.

Unfortunately, the downside (I've had) with cloud manicures in general and this manicure in particular is that the polishes all dry and cure at different rates and I usually end up with either the polish peeling back from my nail tips or ragged, ridged tips, either of which I don't like very much. I'm not sure if this is a problem of me not being patient enough, the top coats I use (as mentioned before, vegan polishes like Zoya, in particular, are very sensitive to most top coats) or just the nature of the manicure.

Goodness, that cloud manicure is gorgeous!

Have you tried the Nubar Diamont top coat with Zoya? It worked pretty well.

Nubar will, occasionally, have a BOGO, or buy-two-get-one, or there will be coupons. So your free one could be the Diamont, if you need more enabling.
